Volvo has unveiled the 2017 S90 premium sedan at a private even at Volvo headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo S90 represents the next step of its entire lineup by 2019, and will make its debut to the world at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2016.

Volvo S90 is the sedan version of the XC90 that was released earlier this year, according to The Verge.

The premium sedan is built on the same modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform as Volvo XC90. The S90 and XC90 have similar engines, subframes, suspension component, infotainment systems, and certain platform proportions.

The premium sedan's design is inspired by Concept Coupe shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The design offers an elegant-looking front end with a large grille with 23 chromed vertical slats, a short overhang, and swept back headlights with integrated T-shaped LED daytime running lights. It also features C-shaped tail lamps underlining the sedan's width.

According to Digital Trends, the S90 U.S. spec models will be offered with two gasoline burning four cylinder engines called T5 and T6, and gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid known as T8 Twin Engine.

The powertrain system uses a complex mix of a 2.0-litre engine, a turbocharger and a supercharger, and two electric motors. The 407 hp hybrid drivetrain enables the S90 to deliver zero to 62 mph in 5.2 seconds and an all-electric range of over 30 miles.

Volvo S90 has an improved version of Pilot Assist, the semi-autonomous driving feature that debuted on the XC90. The feature will allow the car to automatically make steering inputs to keep the car in a lane.

Pilot Assist involves sensors that read the lane markings. The feature has the adaptive cruise control to maintain speed and is active at speeds up to 80 mph.

Volvo S90 also features an updated version of City Safety collision prevention system, according to CNet.

The system will automatically apply the brake when it recognizes an imminent collision with a vehicle, bicycle, pedestrian, or even a large animal such as moose or horse. The feature is paired with a rear pre-collision system that will allow the can recognize when the car is about to be rer-ended.

The S90 offers luxury interior design and spacious space for five passengers. The high standard interior includes premium leather and raw wood, crystal glass shift knob handmade by Scandinavian glassmaker Orrefors, 19-speaker Bowers, Wilkins audio system and an iPad-like Sensus Connect infotainment system interface.

Volvo S90 will go on sale online after the first examples arrive on dealers on June 2016. The price will be confirmed closer to its launch date.
