A Closer Look at Apple's Vision Pro: The Future of Spatial Computing

Feb 14, 2024 11:11 AM EST

In a recent turn of events, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has voiced his thoughts on Apple's new mixed reality headset, Vision Pro. In an Instagram video shared this Tuesday, Zuckerberg didn't hold back his opinions.

He boldly claimed that Meta's Quest 3 headset outshines Apple's Vision Pro, stating it's not just about the better value for money, but it's also "the better product, period."

It's worth noting that Apple had officially launched its Vision Pro earlier this month, priced at a hefty $3,500

So does Zuck have a point? Or is the Apple Vision Pro the next big thing?

The Magic of Spatial Computing

First off, let's talk about spatial computing, which Apple claims is the future. Imagine being able to interact with digital objects as if they were part of your physical environment. It's like bringing your favorite sci-fi movie to life.

Using the Vision Pro, according to Chris Velazco from Washington Post, is "rough around the edges," but it does give an optimistic glimpse into the world of 'spatial' computing. It reminds me of the first time I played a 3D video game. It wasn't perfect, but boy, was it exciting!

One Reddit user shared their mind-blowing experience with the Vision Pro: they described the lens clarity as superior, and the dinosaur and butterfly experience had a level of detail that was simply mind-blowing. It's like stepping into Jurassic Park, minus the dinosaur sneezing in your face.

The Hardware: Impressive or Impractical?

The Vision Pro doesn't skimp on hardware. With terrific built-in speakers and impressive processing power, it feels responsive and snappy.

There is, however, a lot of criticism about it as well.

Critics have pointed out its questionable use of aluminum, making the headset heavier. It's like buying a sports car only to find out it handles like a tank. Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee was one of the first to point this out: "It feels unbalanced." A weird mistake coming from Apple.

A Thousand Apps and Counting...

Despite the controversy, Apple's Vision Pro now boasts over 1,000 apps specifically designed for the device.

Bloomberg boldly claimed that the Vision Pro would soon surpass the iPad. We're probably a bit early for a task like that, but it could be possible with the support that Apple is showing the device so far.

The Verdict?

The Apple Vision Pro is an exciting glimpse into the future of spatial computing. It's not perfect, but it offers an experience that's hard to match. Whether you're a tech aficionado or just curious, the Vision Pro is definitely worth a look. Just remember to lift with your legs, not your back!
