Lego Worlds Enters Constructive Digital Play, Competes with Minecraft

Jun 04, 2015 02:52 AM EDT

Lego fans can now play with the beta version of Lego Worlds through Steam's Early Access program. This is good news for those who want to discover a newer world besides Minecraft. Gamers can play Lego Worlds even before its official launch, until the end of the year.

The Guardian sees the absence of a Lego constructive digital play as the reason why Minecraft is such a big hit. Lego Worlds, just like Minecraft, is an open world construction and exploration computer game. The major difference is, everything in Lego Worlds is - you guessed it, made out of Lego. The game is available on the PC gaming platform.

"Early Access" mode means the game is unfinished, and some of its features are not yet available. The online multiplayer capability- generally seen as the most important component that made Minecraft immensely popular- has not been activated. Other than that, players can already build worlds, drive vehicles, or ride horses and dragons.

TT Games Managing Director Tom Stone said that, "Lego Worlds embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades, on a digital platform that delivers an entirely new type of experience with the beloved bricks."

The large-scale creative gaming business is currenlty dominated by Swedish studio Mojang, creator of Minecraft, and now owned by Microsoft through a $2.5 billion acquisition in 2014. Minecraft, often called the "digital Lego" has over 100 million registered users.

The final release of Lego Worlds is slated sometime in 2016. Pricing and other details are yet to be disclosed.
