Github Released Atom 1.1 and Continues To Grow

Nicknamed as "Facebook for Programmers," Github that hosted many startup code is now releasing its new version of text editor, Atom 1.1. Github was once disturbed by a workplace harassment crisis more than a year ago. However, under new leadership, the $2.0 billion value startup is able to get out of the crisis and continue to grow.

Github was founded in 2008, as a repository hosting service that provides revision control and source code management. Its system is based on Git, a software source code management system written by Linus Torvalds to maintain his Linux operating system source code. Github expanded the functionality of Git, with a web-based user interface and graphical user interface for desktop and mobile. Github is a favorite place for startup companies to host their source code. More than that, Github also encourage people to develop their code and become developers.

The Next Web reported that Github has recently released a training course for newbie programmers. Consisting of 10 sections, the training course is a self-paced program that has two overriding goals: to help programmers manage source code and to use GitHub as a collaboration tool. GitHub also partners with Wheelhouse, a startup training provider company, to provide interactive video and hands-on tutorial for using Github.

Prior to the launching of the trainng course, Github released its new version of Atom text editor. With Atom 1.1. version,  Github release notes announced the new features in the font handling and enhancement in find-replace tool. One of the exciting tools is the ability to using font with typographic ligatures and also font with variable width.  

In second quarter of 2014, a workplace problem hit Github involving Tom Preston-Werner, company's CEO and cofounder occured. He and his wife harrassed a female employee and created a huge mess to the entire Github. As a result, Tom Preston-Werner had to resign as CEO and leave Github. Amidst the crisis, co-founder Chris Wanstrath took the helm of leadeship and managed to bring the San Fransisco startup out of the difficulty. Venture Beat in his report mentioned this case as an example of how startups need to implement policies across the board and define their culture early on. Venture Beat also praised Chris Wanstrath for his measure in handling aftermath of crisis. GitHub demonstrated that when a crisis emerges, it can become a huge opportunity for a company to take a step back and really define its values and what's important to them. Under leadership of Chris Wanstrath, Github is able to achieve what they are now.

With more than 20 million repositories and over 9 million users collaborate on the software projects in Github, the moniker of "Facebook for Programmers" is really a huge accomplishment. With their new Atom 1.1 powerful text editor, Github is ready to grow bigger. They have successfully got out of the crisis and headed towards a brighter future.
