Xiaomi sold 1 million handsets in the third quarter in India, which considered its second biggest market.
CNET has reported that Xiaomi VO Hugo Barra considers this quarter their best quarter ever with the sales benchmarks it reported. The sales in India add a whopping 45 percent quarter-on-quarter growth for the company.
According to a report from the Economic Times, the sales numbers are opposite to Counterpoint Research's data, which shows that Xiaomi shipment declined due to strong competition from Micromax's Yu and Lenovo. Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain said the strong sales were due to the high demand for Redmi 2 Prime smartphones, which are devices manufactured at a Foxconn-run plant located in Andhra Pradesh.
The Indian Express has reported that research firm Counterpoint Media shows that smartphone shipments in India went up 20 percent annually from July to September. According to the report India 4G and LTE smartphone units increased 2400 percent to 10 million units in the third quarter of the year. Notably, one in every two smartphones that were shipped in the country were phablets, according to the research.
Xiaomi is not a very popular brand in the western world. However, the brand's power has grown consistently since it was created in 2010. The company was valued at $45 billion last year. It is ranked fifth in Counterpoint Research's most popular smartphone company list. The company expanded to India in August. It has also started selling in Brazil August this year. It has also partnered with Mobile in Africa Group to distribute their products in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria.
Even though it is not very popular in the West, it can be obtained through online stores. According to Jain, Mi.com site, which is one of the online stores that sells Xiaomi smartphones, attracted millions of customers. Xiaomi on June put up its e-commerce site.
