Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is set to introduce the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show to increase sales.
According to the Detroit News, the new roadster will be released in the US next summer. The original 124 Spider, which was first debuted in Italy 50 years ago, was sold in the United States over 30 years ago in 1985. Fiat aims to increase sales in North America, where it has been struggling since it recently came back in 2011 to the region after a 30-year hiatus.
In a report by Bloomberg Fiat brand global head Olivier Francois said, "There's no better way to celebrate 50 years of the Fiat 124 Spider than to bring back this iconic roadster, pairing its Italian styling of the past with all of the modern performance and technology of today."
Cars reported that the new 124 Spider looks like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but it somehow is visually different. The front and rear ends of the new Spider is higher compared to Miata's. It has larger headlights and it as squared-off taillights, reminiscent to the original 124 Spider.
It also has dual power dome bulges in its hood. The new Spider's interior has more leatherette panels on its dash top and it has a unique door panels. Its seat materials are also unique with a Ferrari-look. Meanwhile, its multimedia system features the Fiat Connect 7.0. The power under its hood can be compared to the Fiat 500 Abarth.
It also has turbocharged MultiAir 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. It makes 160 horsepower and 184 pounds of torque. The 124 Spider is available in Classica and Lusso. Customers can choose from six various exterior colors.
In celebration of the car's return, the first 124 new Spider cars will be limited-edition Prima Edizione Lusso, which will be showcased in the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. Each will have commemorative badges and will be available in exclusive Azzuro Italia blue exterior paint.
