Jaguar Land Rover rolls out a convertible SUV

Nov 19, 2015 10:15 PM EST

Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its Range Rover Evoque Convertible, the convertible SUV on Wednesday. The world's first premium compact SUV made its debut at the LA Auto Show.

According to Bloomberg, the soft-top of Evoque Convertible looks nearly exactly like the original Range Rover Evoque with some additional technology features and few changes on its front design. This new model has new alloy wheel and LED fog lamps.

Living up its compact claim, Range Rover Evoque Convertible has smaller space than the original Evoque.

But Land Rover told The Verge, there are still room in the trunk compartment for a set of golf clubs. It also has a slot that extends from the trunk to the back seat that is suited for a pair of skis.

There was only one example of the Evoque Convertible at the LA Auto Show, with white patina color on its exterior, blacked out wheels, and red and black Oxford leather interior. But there will be plenty more colors and options by the time it reaches dealerships.

The eye-catching exterior design of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is on its sophisticated look roof. It remains the original Evoque's roof design when closed. The roof features Z-fold mechanism that enables uncluttered appearance when lowered.

The Z-fold mechanism involves quick cabriolet mechanics for the convertible top that enables the fully automated roof stows in 18 seconds, and can be raised in 21 seconds at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.

When closed, the roof provides high standards of refinement with a layer of acoustic insulation for interior comfort.

The Evoque Convertible will be available in two configurations, SE and SE Dynamic, with different levels of equipment. Both configurations will use the same technologies as the original Range Rover Evoque. The standard all wheel drive system of the Evoque Convertible works with 240 horsepower turbo charged four cylinder engine and nine speed automatic transmission.

The new Evoque will feature Terrain Response system for its capability in variety of conditions including off-road, in all seasons. It also features aliminium bars to protect passengers in a rollover accident.

The car's designer Gerry McGovern said, as reported on Business Insider, that the Evoque Convertible can wade through 20 inches of deep water. The car is as comfortable on LA boulevard as at an Alpine ski resort. It can tackle challenges without compromise, McGovern added.

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible goes on sale on May 2016 at $51,470.
