XSTAT-30 Gets FDA Clearance to Heal the Gunshot Injury Within Seconds
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of the USA has approved the application of the healing device XSTAT-30 for gunshot injury. It is a sort of a syringe filled with an innovative sponge in the shape of tablets. The sudden shock and trauma or severe bleeding can be controlled with the help of this device.
According to the Gizmodo report, the XSTAT Rapid Hemostasis System is used to control severe, life-threatening bleeding from wounds in body parts such as armpits. It is an expandable, multi-sponge dressing device that is applied by pumping stretchable, tablet-sized sponges into the wound. It is used to stop bleeding while a patient is rushed to the hospital.
The XSTAT-30 was originally designed for military uses and was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in the year 2014. With FDA's clearance of XSTAT-30 for the general populace, many severe hemorrhagic and life-threatening occurrences can be treated among the teens and the adults.
As per the Fierce Medical Services blog, "When a product is developed for use in the battlefield, it is generally intended to work in a worst case scenario where advanced care might not be immediately available." Dr. William Maisel, the acting director of the Office of Device Evaluation in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, stated that he feels happy to see the transformation of technology to help the civilians.
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research states that the civilians' death by trauma injury is around 30-40%. It is majorly due to the hemorrhage. The death percentage is around 35-56% which is caused because the patient cannot be taken to the hospital on time.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration blog, the dressing with the help of this device can be used for up to four hours. It allows time for the patient to receive surgical care. The XSTAT-30 is available in packages of one or three syringe-style applicators containing 92 compressed, cellulose sponges that have an absorbent coating.
The amount of sponge required will depend upon the severity of the wound. The sponge is injected in the wounded part of the body where it inflates and swells. The injury opening or the hollow created is temporarily filled with the sponges which acts like a barrier to stop the blood flow.
Approximately 3 applicators can be applied on the patient. A single applicator can soak up about a pint of blood. The manufacturer of XSTAT-30 is Wilsonville, Ore located RevMedX, Inc.
In the USA, roughly thirty-three thousand people are killed yearly. This year alone has observed around 462 mass shooting cases.
So, the XSTAT-30 has come to the rescue of the people at the right time. It can only be used when the need for an emergency is acute, but the care facility cannot be reached within few minutes.
