The AnnaBis: The Purse that Hides the Smell of Your Weed Stash
With the legalization of marijuana becoming a possibility for more states in the US, the issue of how to carry the drug and its paraphernalia has become a real issue. Plastic bags were usually the method used, but now two women are designing fashionable ways for women to carry their weed along with their wallet.
Jeanine Moss and Ann Shuch have created handbags and clutches that reflected who they are - professional adults that also smoked pot. The accessories are called AnnaBis, pronounced "Anna-Bee", and each bag is lined with what they call "Odor-Loc Technology" that keeps the distinct smell of the weed within the bag along with an air-tight zipper. The technology is a resin that's been used in food preparation and medical technologies.
Moss and Shuch, both in their 50s, have known each other for almost six years. Moss has a background in marketing and communication while Shuch had studied interior design at Parsons School of Design. They told Mashable how they came up with the idea. "We didn't have anything fashionable and functional to carry our cannabis. That's when the light went off. "
Aimed at consumers that like to spend a little bit on luxury, the bags fall in the price range of such brands like Michael Kors or Coach. The AnnaBis bags come in three styles, their Chelsea Cross-Body Bag is $295, their Melissa Multicase Clutch is $175, and they have a small Vape Case that at the time of this article has been sold out. Shuch tells the Washington Post how their bags empower women. "[It's about] women feeling validated in their choices. We're going to validate the choice with beautiful accessories."
Moss and Shuch told Marie Claire how they also wanted to make women comfortable with the idea of smoking weed. The weed industry and culture are generally male-oriented and a social stigma has grown against women because of it. "What women want, need, and demand in cannabis accessories is great design, quality, and discreet functionality that lets us control where, when, and with whom we share our personal preferences."
The bags have been on sale for almost a month now and most of the interested customers have been from the West Coast, where recreational marijuana is legal is many states. AnnaBis is based in New Jersey, where the drug is not yet legal.
