Russia will continue to develop nuclear weapons; but will not use them
Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will continue to develop nuclear weapons but has no intentions of using it.
According to a report from WND, as long as Putin remains the president, he will continue to develop the country's nuclear weapon arms program as part of the country's regular military operations.
Tempo.Co has reported that the Russian leader released the statement in a documentary called "World Order", which was aired on state television Sunday night.
"Russia as a leading nuclear country will be improving this weapon as a containment factor; the nuclear triad is the basis of our nuclear security polices," he said as he was referring to the bombers, the intercontinental ballistic missiles, and the submarine-launched ICBMs, which are the three delivery systems for nuclear warheads.
Putin promised that his nation would never use the nuclear weapons in any act of aggression against other countries saying, "We have never brandished or will brandish this nuclear club, but our military doctrine allocates it a place and role."
According to CBS News, Putin previously announced this move in November to counter NATO's US-led missile defense program and vowed to deploy new strike weapons capable of piercing the shield. Both parties have been publicly sparring for years over Russia's nuclear deterrent capabilities.
Putin said that Washington aims to gain "decisive military superiority" by "neutralizing Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent". As a result, he said his country will respond by developing "strike systems capable of penetrating any missile defenses."
"Over the past three years, companies of the military-industrial complex have created and successfully tested a number of prospective weapons systems that are capable of performing combat missions in a layered missile defense system. Such systems have already begun to enter the military this year. And now we are talking about development of new types of weapons," he further added.
The relationship between Russia and US and its NATO allies has never been this strained since the Cold War. It has plunged to the lowest over the Syrian-Ukraine crisis.
