Comscore’s says Apple top smartphone OEM, but Android still top platform In U.S.

In the US, Apple Inc is the leading smartphone manufacturer in the OEM smartphone market, followed by Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC, according to a report released by internet analytics firm comScore

The data compiled by comScore for the period January and April of this year shows Apple's OEM market share rose to 43.1 percent from 41.3 percent. In second place stood Samsung, whose share fell to 28.6 percent from 29.3 percent, while LG market share stood at 8.4 percent, which is actually a small increase of 0.4 percent. Motorola market share was at 4.9 percent, while HTC market share rose 0.1 percent to 3.7 percent.

However, in terms of smartphone mobile platform, Android leads the pack with 52.2 percent market share, followed by Apple with 43.1 percent.  Microsoft (3%), BlackBerry (1.5%) and Symbian (0.1%) takes the rest of the pie. 

Observers noted the changing trend in mobile market, with Apple's market share rising to 43.1 percent and Android's market share falling from 53.2 percent to 52.2 percent from January to April of this year.

Accordng to comScore's data, there are 188.6 million people in the US who are using smartphones, which means mobile market penetration during the three months, was at 76.9 percent.

The report also named Facebook as the leading smartphone application with 71.1 market share reach, and YouTube as the far second at 57 percent reach.

TechCrunch said the comScore figures for the period between January and April of this year coincides with the 2014 data that eMarketer had released earlier in the year.

These numbers are not way too different from comScore's previous numbers but it is nice to know who is leading the pack and who is falling behind in U.S. marketshare, Android Authority said.

comScore gets its data from MobiLens Plus and Mobile Metrix. By using the two sources, comScore takes a representative samples and a census-based measurement methods to bring out insights on mobile market trends.
