Surface RT tablets are set to receive a mysterious Windows 8.1 RT update sometime in September this year, Microsoft confirms.

Microsoft's Gabriel Aul took to Twitter to reply to a tweet, where he was asked for the release date of Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 for Microsoft Surface RT flagship tablets. He confirmed that the update would be rolled out in September.

Early this year, Microsoft announced that all devices running on Windows RT operating system including its Surface RT flagship tablets, would not be receiving software update to Windows 10.

At that time, Microsoft asserted that the company is working on a software update dedicated for the Surface RT tablet, which might include some functionalities of Windows 10. However, the company has not disclosed anything specific about the update.

Though Microsoft chose not to divulge further details of the upcoming update, tech observers couldn't resist on betting that the update will include built-in Windows 10 universal applications to Windows RT operating system.

The same was the case with Windows Phone 8, which left Windows Phone 7 without a direct update trace. Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7.8 software update to offer some functionality such as an updated and improved start screen, but only Windows Phone 8 devices enjoyed most of the improved and new features.

According to NextPowerUp, the Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 will be an interesting offering from the software giant. This is because Microsoft officially has confirmed that Windows RT is dead and no third-party original equipment manufacturers are involved in the making of tablets with the abortive operating system.

Microsoft has chosen to be tight-lipped pertaining to mysterious Windows 8.1 RT update for Surface RT tablets as of now, leaving both users and tech experts with a lot of leeway to speculate.
