Car makers Mazda and Volkswagen announced a recall of more than 600,000 vehicles due to a possible air bag and steering problems. The car makers announced the recall after regulators decided to open investigations this year.

Investigations were conducted by regulators after receiving repeated complaints of the mentioned problems. There were no reported crashes or injuries since the investigations started.

Mazda recalls 193,000 vehicles covering their 2007-14 CX-9 family vans in various states due to corrosion on a part of a front suspension, which can lead to problems or loss of steering.

The company said that the front ball joints can become corroded due to water leaks and could become detached from the suspension. Suspension parts on both sides of the cars will be replaced by dealers.

Mazda admitted that they first discovered the problem in 2012 May but did not do a recall because the ball joints did not separate immediately when the report was made. However, after several complaints where the ball joints separated suddenly, the company decided to recall the cars.

Mazda dealers will do the replacements of the right and left lower control arms for free. By September of this year, owners will be notified and when parts become available, Mazda will issue another notification.

Volkswagen recalls their 2010-14 Passat and Tiguan, 2010-13 Eos and Jetta, 2010-14 CC and 2011-14 Golf GTI due to possibilities that the airbag will not deploy properly during a crash. Volkswagen recalls 420,000 vehicles. No injuries and deaths have been reported since the problem was discovered.

The airbags will not successfully deploy during a crash is a spring in the steering wheel assembly will malfunction and affect a cable that controls the front airbag's electrical connection.

Volkswagen admits that they are finding solutions to the problem and that owners should observe a warning light for the airbag if their car suffers the problem.

The airbag problem, however, does not seem to be linked to the Takata airbag problems that 11 automakers have encountered.
