Free Mobile TV from Verizon
Verizon has plans to announce this week the beginning of a free, ad-supported mobile streaming service called Go90 which is a reference to the action of rotating a phone to watch videos in a landscape mode. The service targets millennials, ages ranging from 18 to 34 years old and will be available to all users even if they are not Verizon customers.
The introduction of a free, ad-supported mobile video service will be the latest turn in what has been a long and sometimes rocky history for people establishing the service. Much of the team was originally hired by Intel with the aim of creating a full-blown TV subscription service, together with live broadcasting and network feeds with a set- top box to compete with existing pay TV services from cable and satellite TV providers.
"Seventy percent of this group view on mobile first; that's an enormous opportunity," said Marni M. Walden, president of product innovation and new business at Verizon.
Verizon executives made a sensible decision excluding the word Verizon when selecting a name for the new service, in order to attract more audience as much as possible. This is vital for the telecommunication company as they find ways to reinforce its mobile ad business and deliver to advertisers large audiences that watch premium content. Go90 may serve as an effective marketing tool to draw new customers to Verizon's wireless service.
Go90 service will be a mix of live events, prime-time television and original web series. Instead of the inventory of entire networks, it contains popular shows such as Comedy Central, Food Network, ESPN, NFL Network and Discovery, as well as popular online series from AwesomenessTV, Vice, Tastemade and Machinima.
Go90 is the most updated television streaming service introduced in the last year to give viewers more options to watching television outside the traditional cable or satellite bundle. It will include Sling TV, from Dish Network (satellite provider), offering about 20 channels in a core package for only $20 a month and add-ons would be an extra $5 per month.
The Go90 service is developed to urge users to share their experience with friends and beyond social media where users set up profiles to personalize their viewing. The service will continue to update and provide new shows and content.
Verizon's Go90 service will generate income via advertising while promoting the company's mobile business with exclusive content and show to other companies interested in building video services that Verizon has the knowledge and tools to power such service.
