Qualcomm aims to be the go-to chipmaker for drones with new Snapdragon Flight

Qualcomm has revolutionized the drones and now aims to be the go-to chipmaker for this technology with its latest Snapdragon Flight.

Drones may have its legal issues, but it has come a long way as a consumer technology. Drones are now convenient, easy to use, and look slicker. Now, Qualcomm plans to take it up a notch with their new Snapdragon Flight, which runs with the processor that power most prominent smartphones in the world.

According to Mashable, Qualcomm removes the inconvenience of having to incorporate various components like navigation, GPS, and camera on the device. Qualcomm has been trying to combine functionality in smartphone chips for some time, and it will capitalise on this as a go-to chipmaker for drones. The company is redesigning its Snapdragon 800 system-on-a-chip processors for drones with its new Snapdragon Flight. Qualcomm had integrated CPU with GPS, image processing, wireless connectivity, and various software on smartphones.

Wired reported that Qualcomm's system on a chip is a tiny silicon that has multi-core processor and a graphics-processing engine for games, photos, 4K videos, and other components. Basically, it has all the features that a modern smartphone has. These features only indicate that Qualcomm aims to be the default central nervous system for the future drones.

Qualcomm Technologies senior vice president Raj Talluri said, "The Qualcomm Snapdragon Flight brings together the technologies that have defined the mobile industry onto a single board, enabling OEMs to build drones that are lighter, smaller, easy to use and affordable with long battery life and superior functionalities."

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon Flight has Snapdragon 801 SoC with quad-core 2.26GHz processor, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-band WiFi connectivity, Global Navigation Satellite System, real-time flight control systems, 4K video processing, and speedy recharging in something as small as a business card.

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Flight will take the company to the skies by specifically catering to consumer drones and robotics.
