Etihad Rail's High-Speed Train To Add AED145 Billion To UAE's GDP
Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, on Thursday emphasized the importance of the newly unveiled high-speed train in boosting the UAE's economic growth.
Speaking during a press conference held at Etihad Rail HQ, he said that over the next 50 years, this major project is expected to significantly boost the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), contributing an estimated AED145 billion, WAM reported.
Al Shehhi highlighted that the high-speed rail network, linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will provide fast and convenient travel while promoting economic and social connectivity. The network will include six key stations: Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, and Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, along with stations near Al Maktoum International Airport and the Jaddaf area in Dubai.
He also explained that the rail system, powered entirely by electricity, supports the UAE's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. This project will play a vital role in helping the country achieve the goals of the "UAE Net Zero 2050" Strategic Initiative.
Al Shehhi confirmed that the tendering process for the high-speed rail project contracts has been completed, and the network designs have been approved. This achievement highlights Etihad Rail's strong commitment to bringing this transformative project to life.
He also stressed that the company will take full responsibility for the development, implementation, and operation of the high-speed rail network. This marks a significant milestone in the UAE's transportation history.
He noted that the UAE continues to lead in major infrastructure projects, strengthening its reputation as a global leader in transportation and infrastructure.
Alongside the launch of the high-speed rail project, Al Shehhi shared details about the UAE's first passenger train fleet. The fleet, designed to carry around 400 passengers, will include family-friendly features.
The first four passenger train stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah will be connected to existing metro and bus networks, offering a smooth and integrated transportation experience.
He highlighted the importance of this project and the introduction of the passenger train fleet in strengthening the UAE's position as a leader in smart transportation.
He explained that this accomplishment reflects the UAE's dedication to building a sustainable transportation system and modernizing its infrastructure with advanced technology. The project aims to significantly improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors in the UAE.
