Reddit launched an independent news site, Upvoted

Reddit had launched a standalone news site, the Upvoted. Sources will still come from contents on Reddit. It will be revamped to make it more shareable and would surface interesting topics from Reddit's website itself. The company built it to highlight Reddit's interesting contents, Wired reported.

Upvoted will feature videos, podcasts, illustrations and infographics. It will highlight stories on lifestyle, animals, sports and news.

Reddit formed an editorial team of about 10 members to create original content from Reddit's best stories. Vickie Chang, the team lead for the editorial team said, "Everything will have a direct tie back to Reddit. I want to find the tiny thread that connects it back to Reddit."

The company said it is their way to profit from the website's shareable contents. As of now, Reddit has about 202 million users. And news publishers traditionally aggregate on the website to own the credits.
According to a news from The Verge, the team verifies details and interview subjects to create interesting write ups. The contents could also come from the website's multiple posts or from subreddits. Initially, about 10 to 20 stories will be published per day. But the team targets at least 40 articles soon.

On that note, the report said it won't allow pop-up and banner ads. Instead, the team will write editorial posts which will be paid and approved by its advertising partners.  Chang said the sponsored content will be as interesting like their actual stories.

The blog posted on Tuesday states the Upvoted stories will be threaded back to the original poster. It will also be added in a Reddit forum, /r/upvoted. It is the only section where readers could comment and upvote articles.

Upvoted wanted to recapture the traffic Reddit had lost when other sites took their stories. In a way, the Upvoted is somewhat Reddit's business strategy to recoil from negative criticisms it recently had besides collecting revenue from the news website.
