Norwegian Air To Offer Unbelievable $69 One-Way Transatlantic Flights

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, Europe's third largest low-cost airline is planning to offer budget flights from U.S. to Europe for as low as $69 for one-way by 2017.  This was the news shared by Chief Executive Officer Bjørn Kjos on Tuesday.

According to NBC News, Kjos stated that round trip tickets are most expected to cost around $300 that is $200 lower to the regular Norwegian flights that cost $500 due to the expensive fees levied by busier ports.  The Norwegian Air official added that U.S. airports including Norway, New York's Westchester County Airport and Connecticut's Bradley International Airport that have little to no international service will be most likely to offer the flight.

Lufthansa is offering varied destinations with connecting flights to major hubs, but Norwegian Air is planning to focus on providing straight flights to small cities that cross the Atlantic.  The move is a part of the plan to cut the typically dominating trans-Atlantic services provided by airlines such as Lufthansa. With the move to focus on smaller cities, there will be lesser cost.

"I think you will see a lot to that effect within five years' time," Kjos told Reuters via International Business Times. "What will happen to [Lufthansa] when everyone starts to fly direct?"

For now, Norwegian Air is preparing everything to launch its plan by 2017. Currently, it has 100 737 Boeing MAX jets. There are also five more coming by 2017. According to Telegraph, these jets are made specifically designed to fly across the Atlantic.  They have smaller built than the other planes so they can fit smaller ports.  These planes are also more fuel-efficient.

Norwegian Air is not the first airline company to offer budget flights crossing the Atlantic.  Ryanair, Europe's largest budget airline has announced in March that they're planning to offer budget flights to Europe costing around $15 by 2020.  Wow Air recently offered one-way cheap flights from Boston to Paris for $99.

According to Kjos, the budget flights will surely be available in United Kingdom ports such as Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.  The airline has confirmed that the plan will be happening and not merely speculation.
