Tesla launched autopilot system for Model S and Model X SUVs

This week, Tesla Motors had made available the autopilot system on the new Model S sedans in the United States. Tesla will also upgrade those vehicles that were made after September 2014.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the autopilot system will allow automatic navigations on vehicles. The system is integrated in the latest Model S sedans. However, Musk warned the drivers to still keep holding the steering wheel as the system is still in its beta version, Reuters reported.

Musk said in the statement, "We're being especially cautious at this stage so we're advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel just in case." He added, at the start, the autopilot system will not be as good as the driver. But over time, it will be better than the driver. And in the long-term, hands on the wheel will not be needed as it will perform better than the driver.

The autopilot feature is now available in the United States. It will be launched in Europe and Asia the next week.

Tesla provides an upgrade to the autopilot system via over-the-air (OTA) synchronization for Model S sedans and Model X SUVs that were manufactured after September 2014.

The side-impact warning is available for everyone, though for $2500, you could access the full system.

Cameras and sensors embedded in the sedan will keep the passengers safe. "You can imagine a system with eight cameras, that never gets tired, never has had something to drink, is never arguing with someone in the car. It doesn't get distracted." Musk said in a report from the Mercury News.

Some of its features were highlighted in the CBS News. The ultrasonic sensors, radar and cameras allow the car to search for parking, adjust the speed according to the traffic flow and to change lanes.

The system will collect data and will adapt its performance based on the driver. It remembers the stop signs, how fast the driver hits the road and how he change directions.

At this point, Musk said he's currently developing a feature where the vehicle could go in and out of the garage by itself as instructed by its owner.

The autopilot system will let the people experience the future in a very profound way. It will revolutionize their perspective about the automotive technology.
