NYC's Museum of Food and Drink Opens with First Exbhibit ‘Flavor: Making it and Faking It’

The Museum of Food and Drink debuted its first exhibit in New York City, "Flavor: Making it and Faking It" on Wednesday, Oct.28. The lab is aimed at offering fun and learning about how they could change the way people think about food and drinks.

According to Peter Kim, the Museum's Executive Director, the Museum of Food and Drink is the first step to a fully functional museum, which would take years to fulfill it. Right now, the executive director believes that Mofad that can host one exhibition at a time is a major step towards its realization. He adds the museum was in the works for more than a decade, according to ArtsBeat Blogs New York Times.

"We wanted Mofad to look like Willy Wonka meets the Eameses," said Kim. "But there is not a major museum that looks at food and drink writ large. MOFAD will take on commerce, science and production in addition to the more familiar consumption and cooking."

Initially, the team behind the Museum of Food and Drink displayed their first exhibition in 2013 with "Boom! The Puffing Gun and the Rise of Cereal" at the Summer Streets Fesrtival.  This week, the first exhibit of the Mofad team "Flavor: Making It and Faking It" focuses  on the contemporary flavor industry, PopSci reports.

"We are not a science museum," said Dave Arnold, an author, food history expert, and the founder of New York City bar Booker & Dax. "Science is just a lens. We are concept- and experience-driven, and we wanted to showcase the grand story of how our food system got to be the way it is."

Mofad Lab, a 5,000-square-foot space opened its first museum at at 62 Bayard Street in Brooklyn, New York.  According to its website, it is open for five days a week  from Wednesday to Sunday.  A global food educator, the Mofad team aims at inspiring people to get inspired by the food they eat.

The Museum of Food and Drink allows people to see, taste and touch food and drinks. Their first exhibit ticket costs $10 for single entry. The team has also expressed their goal to build a 30,000 square feet museum that looks like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
