One in every four websites powered by WordPress, Survey shows

A survey firm reveals that WordPress now powers 25 percent of the web.

W3Techs' latest data has shown that based on statistics and market share data, WordPress powers 58.7 percent of all the website content management that the survey firm knows about. That number amounts to 25 percent of all the websites in the net. With this many shares of the market, being targeted by various attacks would be expected. WordPress has suffered from numerous security problems ever since it was established.

According to Venture Beat, these numbers may rise or fall during the month, but WordPress' figures show a constant growth. It also reported that Automatic founder Matt Mullenweg said, they should be past 25 percent by the end of 2015. "The big opportunity is still the 57 percent of website that don't use any identifiable CMS yet, and that's where I think there is still a ton of growth for us."

Ubergizmo reported content management systems allow websites to update and have dynamic content. This is easier than static websites, where people have to manually write codes to update the content. There are plenty of platforms for CMS; a lot of them weren't able to become as big as WordPress.

W3techs data shows how popular the platform has become over the years. It has grown from 13.1 percent in 2011 to 15.8 percent in 2012. It has been growing ever since, until today's 25 percent. Joomla is the second most popular CMS, but it comes far behind WordPress. However, there are multitudes of websites that are powered by custom-made CMS, since there are a lot of features that WordPress can't offer them. Notably, W3Techs didn't survey the entire World Wide Web. It focused on the top 10 million websites Alexa's ranking to avoid domain spammers. This means the survey avoided sub-domains, as well as redirected domains.
