Experiencing Rwanda's Rainforest Wonders

For a home of one of the oldest rainforest in Africa, Rwanda offers remarkable green mountainous landscape. The East African country is also called as the "Land of a Thousand Hills". Rwanda's Rainforest is definitely a great place for unwinding getaway. Here's what to experience at the "Land of the Thousand Hills" nature and spots.

According to CNN travel, Rwanda's Nyungwe National Park is rising up over 6000 feet and it is also a remote region of rainforest and covers 386 square miles the part of the country. The country also has a great number of different species of monkeys and chimpanzees.

As it gained its nickname, the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda boasts the highest canopy in East Africa, called the Igishigishigi trail. Tourists can have a thrilling experience while having crossing the canopy walk that is 230 feet above the valley floor. It is bind together by aluminum poles and rope and offers magnificent views of the rainforest beneath.

Major habitants at the Nyungwe National Park are primate species composing closely to 25 percent of its wildlife population in Africa. Traveling at Rwanda's rainforest gives them the opportunity to have an up close encounter with the primate mammals. Chimpanzees are the main star of the Nyungwe and greatly attracts tourists. With the supervision of the tour guides, visitors can get up-close esperience with different kinds of primates.

Other primate species can be seen are Dent's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabeys, Olive baboons, owl-faced monkeys, mono monkeys and Angolan colobus monkeys that are considered with the highest number of species at the rainforest.

Natives of Nyungwe also believe that plants found in the rainforest can cure and heal. A local herbal doctor, Jeremie Retsinani said, "These are natural herbs, I do not mix with anything from the laboratory." The known tree found in the rainforest is the Irebe tree or Begonia is used for healing for many generations. It is the best treatment for wounds, diarrhea and cholera.
