Coca-Cola starts selling carbonated smart water

Giant soda company Coca-Cola announced Wednesday that it will start selling the carbonated version of its smartwater this month and it plans to launch it at a broader scale in 2016.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the Coke-maker will sell the carbonated smartwater in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The industry has been suffering from a decade long decline as people are avoiding the traditional flavoured sodas due to the rising concern of obesity. Meanwhile, industry tracker Euromonitor International reported that the sales of carbonated bottled water in the US went up 10 percent to $786 million in 2014.

NACS reported that Coke is planning to position the carbonated smartwater as a premium product with Jennifer Aniston as its spokesperson. The company has also added electrolytes to the drink. Coke had given flavoured carbonated water a try through its Dasani line. It still sells the plain Seagram's sparkling water. Coke will also sell carbonated Minute Maid with only 6 percent juice content next year.

The carbonated smarwater will be sold at $1.99 for a liter, which is the same as its noncarbonated smartwater.

In a report by Observer Leader, Investors who seeks to buy into The Coca-Cola Co should look into the company's past earnings, future projections by analysts, and its current momentum score. Coca-cola had a $0.51 EPS during the first quarter, a $0.13 decrease from the same quarter last year. The company has 500 non-alcoholic beverage brands under it.

So far Nestle SA is leading the carbonated bottled water industry, which means Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and PepsiCo has a lot of catching up to do. PepsiCo is also planning to sell new sparkling water flavours through its Aquafina brand. Meanwhile, Dr Pepper Snapple is also doing well with its carbonated water line called Canada Dry and Schweppers. It will also expand its distribution of Penafiel in the US.
