Seiko re-launches its classic “Aliens” watch
Japan watchmaker Seiko is re-launching its Giugiaro 7A28-7000 watch that was famous in 1986 as the timepiece actress Sigourney Weaver, in her role as Ellen Ripley, wore in the movie Aliens. The re-launched version named Seiko X Giugiaro Design come in limited edition with two models- the Seiko Spirit Smart SCED035 and the SCED037.
According to The Verge, the original watch was designed by Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1983. The watch is probably the most famous of all Seiko Giugiaro watches. It has a unique design with its blocky panel and a chronograph buttons to the right of the watch. It is also the world's first watch to use an analog quartz chronograph movement.
Seiko Giugiaro 7A28-7000 design was connected to the "popular idea back in the late 1970s and early 1980s that the future is in the outer space," said Ariel Adams in A Blog to Watch.
The watch had a fantastic design that fully encapsulated the futuristic theme of the era that was "industrial, blocky, and verging on dystopian", he explained.
The original Seiko 7A28-7000 has a small waves logo which looks like Seiko dive watch logos on the caseback. It has the matte light gray aluminum wrist.
The steel case is cool-looking but highly avant-garde. The watch has the unique chronograph pusher and an additional pusher in the watch's crown on its left side.
The new Seiko X Giugiaro watches are not quite identical with the 7A28-7000. The relaunch version has a cleaner look compare to its original.
The limited edition Giugiaro lack the extra pusher and crown on the left of the case. This new design is to prevent accidental button presses. The bracelets remain the same with the original version.
The new version of Seiko Giugiaro case has 42.2 mm wide by 41.8 mm long and 10.8 mm thick. The case is coated steel and available in two colors: the matte gray and the matte black. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters. It has 5 years of battery life. It also has 24 hour hand and a stopwatch function.
Seiko X Giogiaro watches will run on the newer calibre 7T12 analog quartz chronograph movement, while the orginal version has the 7A28 movement with the more traditional subdials, minus the date indicator window, and more functional chronograph.
The two new limited edition Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart watches will make better daily-wear timepieces as the original are worth in thousands right now.
According to CNet, the SCED035 and SCED037 are each limited to 3,000 pieces and priced at $260 and $290. These good looking watches are perfect for any science fiction fan.
