With 928,000 patent applications in 2014, China emerged as the leading country in the patent race, surpassing the US and Japan, which ranked at second and third positions respectively. China's patent applications rose 12.5 percent during the year, the US grew 1.3 percent, while Japan declined by 0.7 percent. The total number of patent applications in 2014 were 2.7 million.
