JetBlue Baggage Fees
The cost to check a bag on a JetBlue aircraft depends on when and where you're going. The airline will charge you extra to check your bag if you're flying during peak hours or abroad. This is their method of making up for the additional expenses associated with carrying your luggage.
The airline stated that benefits like seatback TVs and onboard internet connections remain free. JetBlue claimed that the decision helps put a lid on prices while raising the cost of "services that only certain customers use."
JetBlue saw a loss of $104 million on $2.3 billion in operational revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023 as opposed to a profit of $24 million on $2.4 billion in sales during the same time last year. The airline canceled its intentions to pay $3.8 billion to acquire Spirit Airlines, a cheap carrier, in March after a federal court halted the transaction due to worries that it would reduce competition in the market.
Although seldom for additional flight services, carriers have traditionally set ticket costs using a technique known as "dynamic pricing." Other businesses have begun to adopt the strategy; for example, restaurants are experimenting with adjusting menu prices based on demand and the hour.
On its website, JetBlue details the new price structure. You can check up to two bags for free each if you pay for luggage check-in more than 24 hours before your trip.
When flying abroad with two bags during a busy period, such a holiday or a generally busy travel season, the costs increase to as much as $110 within 24 hours of the flight's departure.
The airline charges $45 for "off-peak" flights and $50 during "peak" hours for a first checked bag on "Blue," "Blue Basic," and "Blue Extra" prices, which are its lowest priced ticket tiers. It costs $60 off-peak and $70 on peak for a second checked bag.
Additionally, the cost of transatlantic flights may increase. A first checked bag costs $65, and a second bag costs $105, for an off-peak "Blue Basic" rate. During seasons of high travel demand, the additional costs are $5 for the first bag and $10 for the second.
