BMW Plans a Tesla Model S Rival; CEO says there is space for more e-models

Tesla Motors push to develop self-driving and "summoning" cars through their Tesla Model S. Now, BMW hints of an electric luxury sedan that may rival Tesla's model.

Earlier this august BMW chief executive Harald Krueger told German paper Frankfurt Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that there is a space between their i3 and i8 model if "you look at it from the number point of view."

After being asked if BMW is planning new models, Krueger hinted that there is potential for another "i" electronic car models. He did not disclose any further information, but he said that they are in regular contact with giant tech companies, like Apple regarding these types of cars.

There are reports that BMW may manufacture its i5 as a plug-in hybrid, as well as a pure electric car. Buyers could now have a green car fit for their needs, location, and their commute while driving the traditional body style and drive train they have gotten used to. It may have the layout of the 5-series, but its Bavarian Tesla Model S rival may give it a unique design. These new designs will bring advancements to the sophisticated look of this electric lineup, and its exceptional interior packaging.

I5's plug-in hybrid system is called "Power eDrive." It runs on high-power electric motors, as well as next-generation high-density batteries. Its prototype version combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that has two electric motors, allowing it to run an excess of 670 horsepower. The electric-only driving range may be at 78 miles. It is smaller battery makes the i5 lighter, making it more dynamic.

The Tesla sedan has been on the market for quite some time and German manufacturers have been launching various electric cars in the past several years. This only points to the possibility that major manufacturers will later on use the Model S for their luxury cars. The question is, will BMW be the first to take this technology and bring electric cars to a new level.
