Passionate Horse Race Event, the Palio Di Siena in Siena Italy

In Siena, Italy, the city in central Tuscany is distinguished with medieval brick structures, Gothic town and cultural festivities making it to be a not-to-be-missed touristic destination. Siena is always link to the city's most popular and significant event, Palio which is a passionate horse race in the Italian city.

The majestic city of Siena is a remains its beauty for many years as the protruding archaic buildings, monuments and towers, giant open museums, artisan shops, and impressive Sienese work of arts attracts tourists according to Discover Italia.

The city is known for the Palio, a horse race event held at the city center in Piazza Del Campo. It is the most important celebrated event in Siena as it celebrated the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary at Provenzano Salvani's old home. The IlPalio wrote, since the holy appearance of the image, they called it "Madonna di Provenzano", thus holding Palio in honor to her. The first Palio event in Siena was held on August 16, 1656 and since then it is celebrated twice a year, on July 2nd and in August 16.

According to Discover Tuscany, the Palio in Siena is participated by varied Sienese "contrade" or known as districts from the city challenging each other on horse race. There are 59 Contrade before, however, there are 17 remaining "Contrade", ten of which take part in the historical pageant and in the race at each Palio seven by right and three drawn by lots. Known 17 Contrade on the horse race are Eagle, Snail, Wave, Panther, Forest, Tortoise, Owl, Unicorn, Shell, Tower, Ram, Caterpillar, Dragon, Giraffe, Porcupine, She-Wolf, Goose.

Each Contrada or participants bears their symbols or emblems and also colors that will represent their districts. Contradas are also given distinguished by their flags and symbols when parading the streets. At Piazza del Campo, a square shape ring covered with tuff clay and it is prepared for the event. The Palio is a four-day long event.
