Ethiopia's flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines is considering New York flight route as part of their continuing expanding plans, opening new destinations in parts of Asia and North America in 2016. Along with starting the New York route, the Ethiopian Airlines also plans to purchase new Boeing 777 aircraft types.

According to the The Street, the Ethiopia flag carrier plans to order 20 Boeing 777 carrier types for the said new flight route. The Africa's known biggest carrier is planning to expand their flight route network especially in North America. The airlines' regional director of Americas, Nigusu Worku Wordofa explained, "New York is one of the stations under study, there are other cities as well, we will add a few more stations." 

According to the CAPA, New York is the fourth destination flight route by Ethiopian airlines in North America. The said flight route will also operate in June 2016 along with Toronto, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles. Ethiopia Airlines is also contemplating new routes in 2017 at Chicago and Houston. In parts of Asia, the airline is also planning to operate its services in Chengdu, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta and Singapore.

It was also reported that the purchasing plans of the 20 Boeing 777 aircrafts will be made before the year ends. Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam said that they are thinking to order Airbus A350-1000s. Gebremariam explains they are aiming to increase the airlines company's fleet size to about 150 aircraft by the year 2025. In 2016, the Ethiopian flag carrier will receive its A350 carrier types.

They already talk with Airbus about their 777 type newest order, in previous reports, it was said, the Boeing plane "was deemed more suited to operations from the airline's high-altitude hub in Addis Ababa," the WSJ reported.

However, Wordofa said, "It's good to have different types of aircraft. It gives us flexibility. Boeing and Ethiopian have been in business for seven decades, we have a very bright future and will continue buying Boeing airplanes."
